When people first start out playing guitar, they might be totally confused. Where do I start? What do I practice? Should I take Guitar Lessons? Can I learn online? What to do? If you've never played before, and you came to for a guitar lesson, I would first have you learn the names of the notes and the strings on the guitar fretboard. For the experienced player, learning the basics of guitar seems easy. Since I do have experience, I can help you figure out the best way to learn guitar. After that, its time to start learning some basic guitar chords. So in your first guitar lesson, you might learn some basic chords like A, G, E, and so on. Guitar practice is all about repetition. Let me give you an example. Let's say you are a basketball player. I'm a guitar expert, not a basketball expert, but I imagine there's only a few things to know when it comes to learning how to shoot a free-throw shot. (don't tilt to your body the side, bend your knees, aim for just above the rim, etc). Yet, reading about throwing about a basketball and actually throwing one are two different things. The key is to practice. Once you know how to practice, all it takes is a little consistency and this process of repeating the same thing over and over. This is what builds skill. Don't forget, guitar IS a physical activity, so, it does take time for the body and the nervous systems to adapt. Ok, so back to the guitar lesson. How do we get started playing these basic chords? Your first chord is going to be E minor.. I should mention again that first you need to know what the names of the strings are, and what the frets are. Place your middle finger on the 2nd fret (just behind the fret) on the A string, and your ring finger on the 2nd fret of the D string. Next, simply use your pick to strum all 6 strings. If you're going to be a guitarist, you have to get used to reading chord diagrams. Here's the E minor shown in a diagram: If you have ever seen a standard chord diagram, that's good. These are important to learn and if you take Guitar Lessons? from a private teacher, make sure they are showing you how to read chord diagrams. The first thing that's important to understand is that the low E string is on the left, and the high E string is on the right. Imagine a guitar is placed standing up on a wall, with the fretboard facing out at you. In this position, the low E string would be on the left. So, this is the same idea for the chord diagrams. On a chord diagram, the solid dots indicate that a fretted note is to be played, and these dots indicate where to place your fingers. On a standard Em chord, notice that the A and D strings have dots on the second fret. In this case, we are playing all 6 strings. If a string is not to be played, there is often an “x” above the string. This is all basic stuff you should be taught in your first or second guitar lesson. If you want more information, I suggest you check out http://www.guitarists.net/lessons/ because I go a lot deeper into how to play these basic guitar chords as well as a lot of other important concepts. You'll get some awesome guitar lessons there. Claude Johnson is a guitar teacher from Pennsylvania, USA. He started playing guitar in 1990 after being inspired by Jimi Hendrix. Other influences were Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Carlos Santana, Roy Buchanan and others. His first guitar course is "Killer Guitar Control Secrets", which teaches the improvisational essense of these traditional guitar masters.
